VIDEO EEG examination (wakefulness and sleep)

Diagnostic standard

in the clinic and at the patient's home

As the only private facility in Poland, we specialize in conducting 24-hour Video EEG examinations at the patient’s home. Additionally, we offer multi-hour studies, including 12-hour sessions. This innovative service is available to individuals of all ages – from infants to seniors. By utilizing equipment with parameters identical to those used in clinical settings, we ensure high-quality testing under the supervision of an experienced technician. As a standard, we also perform Video EEG examinations in our clinic, both during wakefulness and sleep.

During the examination, the patient sits or lies down comfortably, and a special cap with electrodes is placed on their head to record the brain’s electrical activity. A camera documents the patient’s behavior, allowing the visual footage to be correlated with the EEG data. Wakefulness EEG is performed on adults as well as children who are able to lie still during the test.

Duration:

  • Wakefulness study: approximately 20–30 minutes.
  • Sleep study: the duration depends on how quickly the patient falls asleep. It is advisable to reserve at least one hour, often longer.

During the procedure, standard activation trials are performed:

  • Hyperventilation (deep breathing)
  • Photostimulation (light flashes)
  • Opening and closing of eyes (applies only to the wakefulness study)

The choice of trials is always adapted to the degree of cooperation, the patient’s age, and the type of study.

Applications of video EEG

When should in-depth

diagnostics be considered?

  • Differentiation of paroxysmal incidents: Crucial in determining whether seizures have an epileptic basis or are pseudo-epileptic events (e.g., psychogenic or cardiogenic).
  • Treatment monitoring: Recommended when there is no satisfactory response to pharma-cotherapy or when seizure frequency increases despite taking medication.
  • Diagnostics of “elusive” disorders: For individuals with rare incidents that could not be recor-ded during short, classic EEG studies.
  • Assessment of atypical behaviors: Diagnosis of night terrors, sleep disorders, sudden “sta-ring spells” (absences), momentary loss of contact, or unexplained movement disorders.

Benefits of video EEG

at home and in the clinic

  • Precise clinical correlation: Thanks to the simultaneous recording of brain activity and video footage, the physician can precisely link the patient’s behavior (gestures, movements, facial expressions) with changes in the EEG recording.
  • Natural environment (home study): Home recording eliminates “white coat syndrome,” which is crucial for children and seniors. The patient remains in familiar surroundings, increasing the likelihood of capturing incidents natural to them.
  • Comfort of long-term studies: We are the only facility in Poland to offer full 24-hour and 12-hour examinations at the patient’s home, which radically increases the detection rate of rare pathological changes.
  • Safety and professionalism: We use clinical-standard equipment, and every examination—regardless of location—is supervised by an experienced technician and described by certified neurophysiologists.

How to prepare for a video EEG examination?

Your Gguide

to preparation

  • For Sleep EEG: Refrain from sleep for an appropriate amount of time before the test so the patient falls asleep naturally during the examination.
  • Clean Hair: Hair should be washed and dried before the test to ensure optimal electrode con-tact with the scalp. On the day of the test, avoid styling products (gels, sprays, oils), as they can hinder electrode placement.
  • General Health: A runny nose, cough, or low-grade fever excludes the possibility of the test. Previous antibiotic therapy is an indication to postpone the appointment by 1 week.
  • Meal: The patient should not be hungry; it is recommended to eat a light meal before the test.
  • Avoid Caffeine: It is recommended to avoid caffeine-containing products (coffee, tea, cola, certain OTC drugs) on the day of the test and the day before.
  • Regular Medications: Patients should continue taking regular medications unless advised otherwise by a doctor. Any changes must be consulted with a physician first.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes that do not constrict the head or neck.
  • Informing Staff: Please inform the staff of any issues, such as a tendency for seizures, skin allergies, or other health concerns.
  • State of Mind: Avoid stress before the test; a calm state of mind helps obtain more stable re-sults.
  • Medical Documentation: Prepare medical records beforehand to provide relevant health in-formation to the physician describing the study.
